(PSHE)
PSHE and the Lindhead vision
Our PSHE curriculum supports our school vision of “Learning, Caring and Growing Together.” It helps children develop the knowledge, confidence and personal skills they need to enjoy learning, feel safe and happy, build positive relationships and become responsible citizens.
Through PSHE, children learn how to care for themselves and others, keep themselves safe and healthy, respect different values and opinions, make responsible choices and understand that they have a part to play in their school, local community and the wider world.
PSHE also supports pupils’ personal development. It helps children to recognise their strengths, develop confidence, work with others, understand feelings and relationships, and build the habits they need to become successful and active learners.
This links closely to our school values of Learning, Caring, Growth and Personal Development, Respect and Responsibility, and is supported by the British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
PSHE in Early Years
In Reception, PSHE is closely linked to Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED). Children begin to develop the foundations they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, manage feelings, become more independent and make safe choices.
PSHE in Early Years is taught through everyday routines, play, stories, adult interactions, discussion, role play and planned learning. Our Reception curriculum includes themes such as Me and My Family, Me and My Body, celebrations, difference, real-life superheroes, people who help us, strangers, goals, sun safety, sea safety and transition. These help children learn about themselves, others and the wider world in an age-appropriate way.
We also use age-appropriate 1decision Early Years resources to support PSED. These include animated stories, read-to-me storybooks, interactive games, talking cards, sorting cards and activities. The resources help children explore real-life situations such as sharing, friendships, worries, safety, healthy routines, screen time, changes at home, people who help us and managing emotions.
This means that children experience PSHE from the very start of school life, through the way they play, talk, listen, solve problems, care for themselves and build relationships with others.
How PSHE is reinforced across school
PSHE at Lindhead is not limited to discrete lessons. It is reinforced through assemblies, collective worship, safeguarding work, My Happy Mind, British Values, SMSC, the 3Bs, visitors, pupil voice, school routines and the wider curriculum. This helps children revisit important messages in different contexts and apply them to everyday school life.
