Early Reading & Phonics

At Lindhead School, we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. Early reading and the teaching of phonics is a priority in our school: Carefully chosen resources have previously led to the percentage of children reaching the expected standard at the end of KS1 being over 93% in 4 of the 5 years up to 2019, with attainment at the end of Year 1 constantly being significantly above national averages. However, through the Covid-19 pandemic we have identified that lower percentages of children are reaching the expected standard. Therefore, we have decided to introduce the teaching of reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. Please see below for further information.

As of October 2021, the new 'Little Wandle' resources are arriving in school and staff are undergoing training. We will be communicating with parents shortly as to how this exciting new scheme will work in school and how this will change our reading routines both at school and at home.

Please see below for the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which shows the progression of 'GPC's" (grapheme - phoneme correspondence) and 'tricky words' at Lindhead.
