English

At Lindhead, English sits at the heart of the curriculum. It helps children to communicate clearly, enjoy language, understand the world around them and express their ideas with confidence.

Our English curriculum is made up of several connected strands: spoken language, reading for pleasure, story and text study, guided reading, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting and writing. These strands are taught both through dedicated English lessons and through meaningful links across the wider curriculum.

Children’s reading and writing develop over time. They encounter a wide range of stories, poems, non-fiction texts, reports, explanations, playscripts, myths, biographies, persuasive writing and classic literature. These texts help children build vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and knowledge, while also providing models for their own writing.

Writing at Lindhead develops from talk, oral rehearsal, handwriting, spelling and sentence construction into increasingly independent writing for different audiences and purposes. Children learn to plan, draft, revise, edit and improve their work, using grammar, punctuation and vocabulary to communicate clearly.

Information about early reading and phonics, including how we teach children to decode and begin their reading journey, can be found on our separate Early Reading and Phonics page.
