Role of the Governing Body

The Governing Body plays a strategic role in the leadership and management of the school. It works closely with the Headteacher and senior leaders to ensure that the school provides a high-quality education for all pupils.

The core functions of the Governing Body are to:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

  • Hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and ensure money is well spent

The Governing Body does not manage the day-to-day running of the school. This is the responsibility of the Headteacher and senior leadership team.

Structure of the Governing Body

The Governing Body of Lindhead School is constituted in line with its Instrument of Government and is responsible for the strategic leadership and oversight of the school.

The Governing Body includes:

  • Parent Governors

  • Staff Governors

  • A Local Authority Governor

  • Co-opted Governors

  • The Headteacher (ex-officio)

The Governing Body meets regularly as a Full Governing Body (FGB) and operates through a committee structure to support effective governance.


Committees of the Governing Body (2025–26)

The Governing Body reviewed its committee structure for the 2025–26 academic year and agreed the following committees and arrangements.

Delegation to committees is set out in the school’s Scheme of Delegation.
Committees report to the Full Governing Body, which retains overall accountability.


Finance, Premises and Personnel Committee (Resources)

This committee supports the Governing Body by overseeing the effective use of resources and ensuring financial sustainability.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Financial monitoring, budgeting and value for money

  • Staffing structures, pay and personnel matters

  • Premises, health & safety and risk management

  • Integrated curriculum and financial planning

The committee operates under agreed Terms of Reference, reviewed annually.
Final approval of the budget and statutory financial decisions remains with the Full Governing Body.


Curriculum Committee (School Improvement), including Safeguarding

This committee has a monitoring and advisory role and supports the Governing Body in its oversight of standards and school improvement.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring curriculum quality, pupil outcomes and progress

  • Reviewing assessment information and improvement priorities

  • Oversight of SEND, inclusion and targeted support

  • Monitoring safeguarding arrangements and pupil wellbeing

The committee makes recommendations to the Full Governing Body.
All statutory decisions and policy approvals are retained by the Full Governing Body.


Headteacher’s Performance Management Committee

This committee is responsible for overseeing the Headteacher’s performance management process in line with statutory guidance.

The committee operates confidentially and reports outcomes to the Full Governing Body as appropriate.


Disciplinary, Complaints and Appeals Panels

The Governing Body establishes panels as required to consider:

  • Staff disciplinary matters

  • Complaints

  • Appeals

Membership of panels is determined according to the matter being considered and in line with statutory and local authority guidance.


Governance Arrangements

  • The Full Governing Body and Finance Committee are clerked by the NYC Clerk to Governors.

  • Other committees are clerked internally.

  • Committee Chairs are appointed at the first meeting of each committee each academic year.

  • Committee Terms of Reference are reviewed annually.
